Photographier les libellules
Général
Les libellules sont considérées par certains comme les « pierres précieuses des airs ». Beaucoup d'entre elles sont belles à voir - les libellules magnifiques, les libellules émeraude, les libellules royales et tous les autres noms. Ce sont de formidables artistes du vol, qui peuvent non seulement voler très vite (jusqu'à 50 km/h), mais aussi s'arrêter en plein vol ou même tourner sur place.
Leur apparence, leur habileté au vol, la structure fine de leurs ailes en font un sujet de photo fascinant.
Mais avant cela, il convient de mentionner deux faits :
- Les libellules sont inoffensives. Elles ne peuvent pas piquer et une éventuelle morsure, due à la peur, n'est pas douloureuse.
- Les libellules sont protégées. Il est interdit de les capturer, de les blesser ou même de les tuer.
Comme d'autres animaux sauvages, les libellules ont une distance de fuite. Pour cela, elles réagissent au mouvement. Il faut donc éviter les mouvements rapides, même avec l'appareil photo. Si l'on se déplace lentement vers elles, il est possible de s'approcher à 1 m ou même plus près.
L'équipement
Avec les appareils photo numériques actuels, il est relativement facile de photographier des libellules. Même si l'on utilise souvent des appareils photo reflex ou des appareils système sans miroir, il est également possible de prendre de bonnes photos avec des appareils photo bridge ou même des appareils compacts plus simples.
Lorsqu'on veut photographier des libellules, on pense d'abord à un objectif macro. Lors du choix, il faut tenir compte d'une chose : Les libellules - comme tous les autres animaux - ont une distance de fuite. Cela signifie qu'elles s'enfuient si nous les approchons de trop près. La taille de cette distance dépend de plusieurs facteurs et ne peut être que testée.
Un objectif macro doit donc avoir une distance focale plus longue. Les objectifs à partir de 100 mm sont parfaits. La vitesse de l'autofocus est importante lorsqu'il s'agit de photographier des insectes volants, car certains se déplacent assez rapidement.
Il existe toutefois une alternative aux macro-objectifs : les téléobjectifs. Distance focale de 300 mm, 600 mm ou plus (avec un téléconvertisseur). Une distance focale plus longue permet un agrandissement plus important, mais réduit également la profondeur de champ.
Néanmoins, une distance focale plus longue présente 2 avantages:
- La distance par rapport à la libellule (ou à l'animal en général) est plus grande et réduit le réflexe de fuite.
- Assez souvent, la libellule n'est même pas accessible, car elle se trouve dans une zone qui ne l'est pas.
Si la distance de mise au point n'est pas suffisante, il est encore possible d'utiliser des bagues-allonges.
Si l'on utilise des focales plus longues, il peut être intéressant de travailler avec un trépied afin d'éviter les secousses. Toutefois, les appareils photo actuels disposent d'une bonne stabilisation d'image, ce qui permet de travailler sans trépied même avec des focales de 400 mm ou plus. En cas de nécessité, il est souvent possible de poser l'appareil photo sur un trépied ou de le coincer contre un arbre.
Libellules au repos
Une partie des libellules sont des « chasseurs à l'affût », c'est-à-dire qu'ils chassent leurs proies à partir d'un endroit fixe et y reviennent toujours. C'est le cas par exemple la Calopteryx splendens, ou la Libellule à quatre taches. On les voit souvent perchés sur des branches ou même au sol. Pour ces photos, je travaille généralement avec un téléobjectif afin de garder une certaine distance avec les animaux et de ne pas les effrayer. Les distances focales à partir de 100 mm sont ici intéressantes, j'utilise aussi - selon la distance - des 600m ou 840m... Il faut alors tenir compte du fait qu'une distance focale plus longue entraîne une profondeur de champ plus faible.
Pour l'autofocus, je vais sur un point du capteur ou sur un bloc de neuf points maximum, afin qu'aucun élément perturbateur ne vienne perturber l'autofocus.
Le temps d'exposition et l'ouverture dépendent de la distance focale. Pour une focale de 600 mm, je règle le temps d'exposition sur 1/800 s, généralement à l'ouverture 11. La valeur ISO est réglée par l'appareil photo, ce qui fonctionne relativement bien avec le Canon EOS 5D III.
En règle générale, je travaille en mode série, c'est-à-dire que je prends plusieurs photos à la suite. Cela permet de prendre des photos même dans des conditions un peu plus venteuses ou lorsque la libellule part en vol.
